In 1933 Adolf Hitler was elected ReichsChancellor and immediately set out to restore German pride by reversing the humiliating restrictions imposed upon Germany by the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. Arguing that these were imposed primarily at the behest of France, with whom Germany had a long and troubled relationship, Hitler sought to build an alliance with Great Britain.
Britain's interest lay in her Empire, and the security of both the homeland and overseas dominions would best be maintained by excluding from these areas any foreign powers which might seek to challenge the pax Britannica. His Britannic Majesty's Government therefore, mindful of the potential threat from a resurgent France, saw advantages in promoting relationships with the nascent Reich whose outlook was to the mainland of Europe. A powerful Germany would serve as a counter to European powers whilst posing no challenge to British interests in Africa, the Middle and Far East, India and the Pacific.
Should Germany wish for lebensraum, then there was ample scope to the east, an area in which Great Britain had no interest. Indeed, a strong threat to Russia would take envious Soviet eyes off the Indian sub-continent, the jewel in the crown of Britain's Empire, and ultimately even remove the long term threat posed by communism to the imperial powers...
